New Spell system for SBH | Date: 07/06/2014 | ||||
A big (optional) change coming into SBH is a full spell-system. Instead of broad classes like Magic-User and Necromancer, you will create a spellcaster by taking the Spellcaster trait (3 pts) and adding spells from a list. Each spell has a backfire effect that happens when you botch 3 dice roll. Mages are also allowed to bank an action or more to cast reaction-based spells like Counterspell or Deflection. All future supplements for SBH, and the revamped SGD and SWW will add a few spells (I'm not short on ideas, but playtesting them takes forever) and all spells will be added to the builder. The old magic-using types are still playable - a Magic-User is just a Spellcaster with the spells Magic Blast and Transfix. When we will have enough, we could have all spells collected in a single volume in a couple of years, but we'll see. As an example of what the new optional spell system looks like, here is two spells we all know and use already, tweaked and described in the new format. As you can see, each spell has a point cost and a few "tags" that define how the spell works. For example, Ranged means it can be cast at the usual 1 action= short range, 2 action= medium etc. Prolonged means that it can be cast over multiple sticks with -1 per extra stick, and so on. Enchantment means that the spells stays in effect until dispelled (Break Enchantment) or some other condition breaks it (the spellcaster dies or flees, etc). TRANSFIX (8 PTS) MAGIC BLAST (5 PTS) |
